Detecting Fake News in Social Networks via Crowdsourcing
نویسندگان
چکیده
Our work considers leveraging crowd signals for detecting fake news and is motivated by tools recently introduced by Facebook that enable users to flag fake news. By aggregating users’ flags, our goal is to select a small subset of news every day, send them to an expert (e.g., via a third-party factchecking organization), and stop the spread of news identified as fake by an expert. The main objective of our work is to minimize the spread of misinformation by stopping the propagation of fake news in the network. It is especially challenging to achieve this objective as it requires detecting fake news with high-confidence as quickly as possible. We show that in order to leverage users’ flags efficiently, it is crucial to learn about users’ flagging accuracy. We develop a novel algorithm, DETECTIVE, that performs Bayesian inference for detecting fake news and jointly learns about users’ flagging accuracy over time. Our algorithm employs posterior sampling to actively trade off exploitation (selecting news that directly maximize the objective value at a given epoch) and exploration (selecting news that maximize the value of information towards learning about users’ flagging accuracy). We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach via extensive experiments and show the power of leveraging community signals.

Fake news propagate differently from real news even at early stages of spreading
Social media can be a double-edged sword for modern communications, either a convenient channel exchanging ideas or an unexpected conduit circulating fake news through a large population. Existing studies of fake news focus on efforts on theoretical modelling of propagation or identification methods based on black-box machine learning, neglecting the possibility of identifying fake news using o...
متن کاملFake News Mitigation via Point Process Based Intervention
We propose the first multistage intervention framework that tackles fake news in social networks by combining reinforcement learning with a point process network activity model. The spread of fake news and mitigation events within the network is modeled by a multivariate Hawkes process with additional exogenous control terms. By choosing a feature representation of states, defining mitigation a...
متن کاملFake News in Social Networks
We model the spread of news as a social learning game on a network. Agents can either endorse or oppose a claim made in a piece of news, which itself may be either true or false. Agents base their decision on a private signal and their neighbors’ past actions. Given these inputs, agents follow strategies derived via multi-agent deep reinforcement learning and receive utility from acting in acco...
متن کاملA New Consensus Method for Social Networks Viability
This paper presents a conceptual model to allow communities self-detecting fake and inappropriate news on social network sites based on collective intelligence and inspired by Viable Systems Approach. The model is grounded on an extension of the Gruber model (on which Collective Knowlegde Systems are based) which incorporates a Consensus Method typically used in the Group Decision Making.
متن کاملDetection of Fake Accounts in Social Networks Based on One Class Classification
Detection of fake accounts on social networks is a challenging process. The previous methods in identification of fake accounts have not considered the strength of the users’ communications, hence reducing their efficiency. In this work, we are going to present a detection method based on the users’ similarities considering the network communications of the users. In the first step, similarity ...
